Transport Planner - Job summary

As a Transport Planner, you will be responsible for planning and coordinating the daily movement of vehicles within the General Haulage division. You will ensure that all transport operations run smoothly, effectively, and in full compliance with UK road transport regulations. Working closely with the Operations Manager and transport team, you will play a key role in optimising route efficiency, maximising fleet utilisation, and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.

Transport Planner - Job Responsibilities

  • Plan and schedule transport routes for a mixed fleet of vehicles, ensuring maximum efficiency and on-time delivery for general haulage services.
  • Manage load allocations based on vehicle capacity, delivery times, and customer requirements.
  • Liaise with drivers to communicate schedules, provide job details, and address any queries or on-road issues.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for customers, providing updates on deliveries, handling any transport-related inquiries, and resolving service issues promptly.
  • Ensure all transport operations adhere to legal and safety regulations, including driver hours, working time directive, and tachograph regulations.
  • Monitor fleet utilisation, reducing empty running and optimising vehicle capacity to drive operational efficiency and cost savings.
  • Handle any day-to-day issues, such as traffic delays, vehicle breakdowns, or delivery changes, ensuring minimal disruption to schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records for all transport activities, including delivery notes, route logs, and compliance documents.
  • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), such as on-time delivery rates and vehicle efficiency, to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct driver briefings before and after shifts to ensure compliance and performance standards are met.

Transport Planner - Job Requirements

  • Previous experience in transport planning, ideally within the general haulage sector.
  • Strong geographical knowledge of the UK road network.
  • Familiarity with Transport Management Systems (TMS) and route planning software.
  • Understanding of transport compliance and health & safety regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, handling multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise confidently with customers, drivers, and internal teams.
  • A proactive problem solver with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience managing a diverse fleet and coordinating multiple deliveries and collections.

Transport Planner- Job Remunerations

  • 35,000 - 50,000 depending on experience.
  • Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
